Speaker:
B.J .Loggins, Security Team Supervisor for Cleveland Heights- University Heights Librariy He has been with the with the library system for 9 years. He has spoken at OLC Conferences on dealing with teen behavior in public libraries as well as for this own library. He was a Juvenile Corrections Officer for Summit County, a Group Counselor for Youth Employment Opportunity Program, as well as tutor for elementary school students in the city of Shaker. He believes in order to have an effect on the teens in your community you must establish a rapport and know the community you serve. Know the diversity, whether it’s social, economic, racial, etc.
Program Description:
Are teens being underserved in your library due to their behavior or are staff welcoming the teens and trying to establish a rapport? Are we offering services that will engage teens? Have we fostered good relationships with the local police so they know our problem teens? These are just a few questions of many that we must ask ourselves before we can actually figure out a way to succeed with the teens who frequent our libraries. Libraries have changed and so must we. The services that are offered are different and the days of the “shhhh library” are dead. Does that mean we will tolerate bad behavior from teens? NO. But there are effective ways that BJ will show you that you can apply in your libraries that will help. Don’t be alarmed teen challenges are universal. You’re not alone and there are answers.

Attendees will learn:

  • How to engage their teens
  • Raise their and their staffs comfort level working with teens

Children’s Literature for the Rest of Us Series:
Books for Babies, Toddlers, Preschoolers
Program Date: 10/20/2011
Program Time:10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
Speaker:
Sue McCleaf Nespeca, NEO Youth Services Specialist
Program Description:
This workshop is NOT intended for youth services librarians; rather public service librarians who must “work the floor” and are asked to make book recommendations for youth readers when children’s services librarians might not be available to help. Examples: “What are some funny books for my third grader to read?”; “Do you have books for babies?”; “What are some books that my son (reluctant reader) might enjoy?”; “My child read all the Captain Underpants books. What else do you recommend?”

This workshop will be offered as three webinars, and will only cover fiction titles, for books for babies through tweens (i.e. babies through about sixth grade). Though the focus is to public service/adult librarians, those who are less experienced and work in a children’s area of a library might find this useful.

Below is the list of the entire series:
October 20, 2011: Books for Babies, Toddlers, Preschoolers
November 17, 2011: Learning to Read Books; First Chapter Books; Books for Early Elementary Grades
December 8, 2011: Books for Grades Three to Six; Folktales; Series Books

Speaker:
Andrew Sanderbeck has been developing and conducting training seminars for libraries and library organizations for more than ten years. He is the founder of the People~Connect Institute Webinars.
Program Description:
What do you do when a customer or employee gets in your face or in your space? How do you react&or do run and hide from it? What is the secret to handling situations with difficult angry customers while maintaining your composure and professionalism? How can we de-emotionalize ourselves to the situations so that we don't get caught up in them?

The Handling Angry Customers with Tact and Skill webinar explores our dealings with other people by defining the source of their anger and difficult behavior, (hint: it's not usually the person, it's their behavior) and gives you a step by step approach to help you effectively diffuse and resolve these situations.
