A Glimpse into the Future... The Opportunities and Challenges for Tomorrows Libraries Libraries today are at a crossroads...we must align our traditional values and services to todays digital age. Libraries have enormous opportunities to influence and direct their future in the next millennium. Challenges & Opportunities for Public Libraries - Deborah OConnor, Director of the Geauga County Public Library, will address changes in the "traditional" family and its impact on library services today and in the future. Challenges & Opportunities of Future Technologies Brad Stephens, NOLAs Technology Coordinator, will demonstrate the possibilities of video conferencing and voice recognition. These technologies are nearly ready for "prime time" and will likely become commonplace within the next two to three years. With the availability of high-speed connections to the Internet and increasingly more powerful computers, we can anticipate that both of these "futuristic" technologies will impact libraries by the turn of the century. Challenges & Opportunities for Library Education Danny Wallace, Dean of the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science, will share news about the Schools new OHIOLEARN (Ohio Libraries Education, Access, and Resource Network), a coordinated multilevel education and training program for Ohio libraries. Challenges & Opportunities for Schools Beverly Willis, Rootstown Middle School Librarian, will challenge us to act as "navigators" who will guide students and teachers to the most useful resources, thus unlocking the knowledge and information contained in the vast annals of the information superhighway. She will be discussing INFOhio and electronic resources for social studies. Challenges & Opportunities of Digitizing Local Collections Because of growing electronic capabilities, your librarys local collection could become "everyones" collection. During our Open House, you can tour the new state-of-the-art NOLA Digital Collection Service Center where you can have a hands-on demonstration of how todays technology will allow you to share your librarys collection "with the world." Dont miss this chance to learn about the top trends facing libraries as we quickly move toward the next millennium! A Glimpse at Tomorrows Libraries...While Not Forgetting Our Past. |
